Abstract

The Levant Company which had founded on the basis of Turkish-British relations started in the late 16th century had started commerce activities in the important port cities of the Ottoman Empire. On the same dates, the company would like to be involved in the Egyptian market, the commissioners who they sent thought significant gains could be made in this region. However, in later years, positive expectations were not realized, the company had decided to withdraw from Egypt due to the incurred losses of the merchants in a short time. Despite the company's attitude British traders rarely had continued to visit Egypt for some reasons. From the 17th century onwards, the influence of the central government had started to decrease in Egypt, customs in ports had passed to the dominance of the Janissaries in the region. Due to reduced control at customs, British who are not represented by their consulates in Egypt faced with many difficulties. Throughout this century, in Egypt, British were represented by French consuls and Levant Company remained uninterested to problems that they face. However, at the end of the century, change of throne in England would bring the English and the French against each other. Levant Company would go back to the Egyptian market in spite of trading losses under these conditions and would apply government's anti-French policies in here.
