Abstract

Travertines outcrop in many places in the upper basin of the Karasu River which is a branch of the Euphrates. Undoubtedly, travertine accumulation forms around the Otlukbeli Lake is the richest in terms of travertine accumulation forms. Otlukbeli travertines located in the valley of the Sazlar River in the northwest of Otlukbeli downtown spread in the western side of valley between 1837- 1935 m heights. Thickness of travertines deposited on Ophiolite melange is nearly 20 m. In the west and southwest of the Otlukbeli Lake which is travertine barrier lake travertine ridges, travertine cones and travertine chimneys appeared. 26 travertine ridges between 11-150 m in NE-SW, NW-SE, N-S and E-W directions in travertine area were marked on the map. Ridge caused formation of the Otlukbeli Lake is the longest travertine ridge in the area. Water flow continues in the west of active ridge. Travertine ridges supply important information about active tectonic of the region. Cracks in the travertine ridges increase in NE-SW, NW-SE and N-S direction is the result of compressive tectonic which is active in the region. 84 travertine cones, 14 travertine chimneys in harmony with these tectonic structures, 14 are found in the area. Great part of these travertine chimneys and cones exist on ridges. Travertine precipitation in all travertine and chimneys finished. Cones are in the height of 10 cm and 3 m. Basin calibres change between 50 cm and 25 m. Travertine precipitation continues in a restricted area in travertine ridge and around which caused formation of the Otlukbeli Lake. Travertine precipitation ended in other places and dolines and perforated lapies appeared. Otlukbeli travertines are considered as cultural heritage. Some of cones and chimneys which are travertine precipitation forms in the area were spoilt until discovery of this geographic wealth. It is necessary that these precipitation types formed after hundreds of thousands of year be benefited in tourism by taking under protection.
