Abstract

Arabic and Persian have become one of the important factors which have affected on Turkish culture and civilisation as scientific and literary historically. These languages have got a distinct place for classical Turkish literature to be a literary tradition as a form and content. Many factors from expressions to poetic themes, from rhythm to rhyme have invigorated in the texts with the help of Arabic and Persian words in this literary tradition.Teaching and learning these languages became gradually an important need in parallel with the developments in the scientific and literary tradition in Ottoman society. Many poetic or prose dictionaries belonging to these languages have been prepared in order to meet this need. Poetic dictionaries which were written in Persian-Turkish, Arabic-Turkish or Arabic-Persian-Turkish have gotten attention especially as they make the language learning enjoyable and also increase the subsistence of the words in mind, and there have gradually been an increase in the number of these works. It is known that there are nearly seventy poetic dictionaries in the classical Turkish literature. One of them is Persian-Turkish dictionary which was written in order to teach Persian to the children by a poet who has got an ekename as Leâlî. This poetic dictionary which was written in 17. century or the previous periods consists of the introduction and four quatrains that the mutual meanings about of 250 Persian and Turkish words are given. In this study, the form and content properties of the poetic Persian-Turkish dictionary which was written by Le’âlî will be considered and the work’s translation text will be provided.
