Recāīzāde Mahmūd Ekrem Beyin Emile Lefrancın Traité théoretique et pratique delitterature adlı Fransızca bir okul kitabını model olarak alıp hazırladığı ve Mekteb-iMülkiyede verdiği derslerine dayanan Talīm-i Edebīyātı, Tanzimat devri Türk edebiyatındaedebiyat, edebiyat teorisi ve edebiyat eleştirisi sahasının önemli eserlerinden biridir.Christopher Ferrardın kaleme aldığı aşağıdaki sayfalar, eserin sunduğu edebî eleştirininniteliğini ve Osmanlı edebiyat eleştirisine katkısını değerlendirmeye bir teşebbüsle Talīm-iEdebīyātın kısa bir çözümlemesine ayrılmıştır. Ekremin bu eseri, edebiyat teorisi veeleştirisinin hem Avrupâî, hem de İslâmî iki geleneğini birleştirir. Yazar, Talīm-i Edebīyātı,edebiyat eleştirisinde kendinden önce gelen ve bu yolu hazırlayan eserler görmezliktengelinmemesine rağmen, yine de devrimci bir eser olarak nitelendirir.

Recāīzāde Mahmūd Ekrems Talīm-i Edebīyāt, dependending on his courses which he tooka French school book entitled Traité théoretique et pratique de litterature by Emile Lefrancand prepared it as a model, and presented their in the Mekteb-i Mulkiye is one of importantworks of the field of the literary, literary theory and literary criticism in the Turkish literatureof Tanzimat era. The following pages by Christopher Ferrard are devoted to a brief analysis ofthe Talīm-i Edebīyāt in an attempt to ases the quality of the literary criticism and itscontribution to Ottoman literary criticism offered by the work. This work by Ekrem combinesboth the European and the Islamic two traditions of literary theory and criticism. Yet Ferrardcharacterises as a revolutionary work the Talīm-i Edebīyāt, although it can not be ignore theworks which preceded it and prepared the way for this in the literary criticism.
